Blurb: What if you knew when someone was going to die?

For seventeen-year-old Ember, life is death. With a simple touch, she knows when someone will die. It’s her curse and the reason she secludes herself from the world. The only person who knows her secret is her best friend Raven.

Then she meets Asher Morgan. He’s gorgeous, mysterious, and is the only person Ember can't sense death from. So when he pushes into her life, she doesn’t mind.

But when unexplained deaths start to haunt her town, Ember starts questioning why she can’t sense Asher's death and what he may be hiding.

About the Author:

Jessica Sorensen lives with her husband and three kids in the snowy mountains of Wyoming, where she spends most of her time reading, writing, and hanging out with her family.

Review: 3 ½ out of 5 stars

Ember was kindly provided to me by SupaGurl Book Tours as part of Jessica Sorensen’s blog tour and is the first book in the Death Collector series.

With a simple touch, seventeen year-old Ember can tell how and when a person is going to die, she is a social outcast; ostracized by her peers ever since the disappearance & possible death of her father for which she was blamed, her brother and her mother both have issues and the only person aware of Ember’s death touch is her best friend, Raven.

With the arrival of two new guys in town, Asher and Cameron both from New York things become quite interesting for Ember, especially with both of them vying for her attention and affections but also with big secrets of their own.

Ember was a strong character who has endured a lot, imagine being able to see everyone’s death omen on a daily basis as well as live in a broken family environment; I felt for her and the curse she is slowly beginning to learn more about.

Asher and Cameron were both intriguing – and Ember couldn’t sense death on both of them, a welcome relief for her but Asher was a clear winner for me, I adored him! There was something about Cameron I didn’t trust at all; I am not a love triangle fan but the romance was written in a way that didn’t drive me batty, maybe because of Ember’s inner dialogue about one in particular.

Ember’s best friend Raven wasn’t the most endearing character, but the role she played was crucial to the storyline; I actually hope we see a tad less of her in the next installment.

I have read a few books about this particular supernatural lately (I won’t reveal what they are to avoid spoilers) but Ms Sorensen’s take was fresh and creative, the little twists she gave made for a unique read which I quite enjoyed. I was guessing throughout this book who was good versus evil and we don’t really find this out until the end, the mystery made for an entertaining read.

There were a few minor inconsistencies throughout but nothing that couldn’t be overlooked or took away from the actual story and I found some aspects to be confusing.

This is the first book I have read by Ms. Sorensen; her writing is engaging and the storyline definitely interesting. Darkness and death is rife in this story but there is also optimism so I am definitely eager to read the next book in the Death Collector series.

Thank-you to Supagurl Book Tours and Jessica Sorensen for the opportunity to participate in this tour.

  4. Is it just me, or does the cover resemble the author a bit? :) I like the sounds of this one. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the review! :)

  5. It does, Lisa! And the author looks a little like Elizabeth Hurley, doesn't she?

I only read a few chapters before I had to put it down, but this sounds a little Jenny Pox-ish maybe? I love the idea of having Hands of Death (dun dun dun). It's such a cool idea. I'm so glad to hear you didn't find the romance annoying and it's worth sticking with for the sequel.

I'm going to pick it up! Terrific review, Sharon. :)
