Review: OPAL (Lux #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Opal (Lux, #3)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: Lux
Pages: 452
Publisher: Entangled
Genre: Young Adult - SciFi
Amazon: OPAL

Synopsis. (Goodreads)

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger... and they know it.

Review: 5 out of 5 stars

OPAL is the third book in the Lux series by the amazingly talented Jennifer L. Armentrout.

I adore this series!! it is one of my all time favourites; the characters are fantastic, the storyline is engrossing, Ms. Armentrout's writing is brilliant and it completely makes me lose sleep! A sign to me of an amazing book.

In OPAL we see the relationship between Katy and Daemon progressing, Dawson has returned and gun ho on saving Beth, the DOD are a constant threat, the Elders are also present and could possibly outcast Daemon for being with Katy and Katy is learning more about her hybrid abilities – it was ongoing drama from the onset but enjoyable drama that kept me mesmerized.

We also see the return of Blake! Who would have thought he’d be silly enough to come back after the events in ONYX but he needs help to save his friend Chris and the Luxen needs his knowledge of the DOD headquarters to rescue Beth (and Chris).

I loved everything about this book, there was less action than the first two installments but I didn’t mind that; there seemed to be a lot of plotting and planning. I loved the relationship progression between Katy and Daemon; he is still as snarky as ever but also really sweet, protective and sensitive, who would have thought! Katy has really progressed as a character; she is no longer a quiet, seemingly needy book nerd (I say with affection) but kick-butt and determined which I really appreciated.

All of the characters are what makes this series so enjoyable, secondary included; Dee has made such a drastic change – I liked the sweet Dee! Dawson I grew to adore, Blake made me cringe and Will (argh!) there are also a few new characters we meet who I quite liked and never knew whether to trust or not.

We are left with a shocking, heart-wrenching cliffhanger so the wait for ORIGIN which has an anticipated July 2013 release date is going to be excruciating.

Overall, OPAL is a fantastic addition to the amazing Lux series and will appeal to lovers of Young Adult and Sci-fi fans alike.

  1. I'm glad you loved it! I'm treating this like I did Karen Marie Moning's Fever series - since I'm reading it for pleasure, I expect cliffhangers and I'm backed up with other things anyway, I'm just buying them as they come out and will plan on a marathon eventually. :D

Awesome review - I'm so happy to hear the series is still good/getting better.

    1. The cliff hanger is as bad as a KMM! I am thankful I read the Fever series just before Shadowfever was released, the wait wasn't as excruciating;)

  2. (True story: I cried over Dawson's return. I have NO idea why, but I am like already attached to his character, but waiting to read Opal for awhile so Origin isn't SO flipping far away.)

Fantastic review, Sharon. You've gotten me even MORE excited for Opal, especially just seeing what you had to say about Katy's growth (yay!) and Daemon and her relationship's progress. YEAH!

    1. Aww Molli, you are too sweet! His return was really emotional, he's such a tortured soul. I'm not even sure when the next book will be released, I was too anxious to devour Opal ;)

  4. Him glad you loved Opal! I really liked Obsidian and Onyx, but haven't even picked up Opal yet. Based on the cliffhanger talk going around, I may wait for the next book.
    Excellent review, Sharon!

  5. Just found your page -- thank you for your insight on books. I scanned through some of your older posts and I'm going to try out Hopeless by Colleen Hoover because right now I desperately something to distract me from the hole in my chest after just finishing Opal. That cliffhanger is killing me...
